Nitrofurantoin and alcohol

Can you drink alcohol while on macrobid?

round-arrow-down

While there are no known direct interaction between Nitrofurantoin and alcohol, it is still not a good idea to mix the two. Moderate alcohol consumption (one glass a day for women and two glasses a day for men) will not interfere with nitrofurantoin. However, excessive alcohol consumption, in addition to causing serious health problems, may reduce the drug’s effectivity.

If you do plan to drink alcohol, no matter how little, you should let your doctor know, as there may be other health considerations beyond interactions with this one drug.

If you are using Nitrofurantoin to treat an active bladder or urinary tract infection, you should abstain from alcohol regardless.  Alcohol can exacerbate the infection and increase the length of time for recovery.

Another reason to avoid alcohol while taking any medication, is that is can keep you from noticing any significant side effects. Some side effects can be serious, so it’s important to remain as attentive as possible.

If you are not sure if you are drinking too much, consult your doctor about it. Your doctor will be able to tell you how much alcohol is acceptable for you, and what other substances you need to abstain from while your body is healing.
