Drinking alcohol while taking statins is not advisable. If you do choose to drink, it is important that you do not drink excessively. Consuming large amounts of alcohol with a statin increases the risk of side effects. Any side effects you do experience may become worse, and new side effects can occur. Some side effects may even be serious.
Statins are often taken for high cholesterol, and drinking alcohol can make the statin less effective. When taking statins, your doctor will likely advise you to consume a low-cholesterol diet and exercise regularly.
