Is Cialis available over the counter?

What Cialis is, its patent and expiration; availability in and outside the US

Cialis is a popular and effective male erectile dysfunction (ED) drug, invented by the biotechnology company, Icos Corporation and later purchased by the pharmaceutical company, Eli Lilly and Company.

In May 2014, the French pharmaceutical company, Sanofi acquired from Eli Lilly, the sole rights to apply for the rights to market Cialis over-the-counter (OTC).  This probably means that when the Cialis patent is expected to expire in 2018, Sanofi has the right to make all applications for OTC approval in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.

That said, concerns about the potential for misuse, the complicated educational material needed to accompany the medication, and the fact that the underlying medical conditions leading to ED would go untreated, make it difficult for the approval of ED drugs to be available OTC.

However, there is a potential for Cialis to follow the OTC-approval pattern of Viagra.  In the United States, Sildenafil and its brand name, Viagra are only available by prescription; but in the United Kingdom for example, Viagra is available OTC without a prescription, under the name, Viagra Connect.

At present, Cialis is only available by prescription because it’s not appropriate or safe for everyone to take it. Certain health conditions and other medicines can make it unsafe to take Cialis.
